The berimbau is a percussion instrument with a single string that comes from Brazil and is closely linked to Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art and dance. It is made up of a wooden bow, traditionally crafted from biriba wood, with a steel string stretched tightly along its length. At the base of the bow, there is a gourd resonator that amplifies the sound created by the vibrating string.
To play the berimbau, a small wooden stick known as a "baqueta" or "baqueta de berimbau" is used to strike the string, producing a musical tone. The pitch of the note can be changed by pressing a small stone or coin against the string with the player's thumb while simultaneously striking it with the stick. Additionally, the berimbau player often uses their other hand to manipulate a small open-weave basket rattle called a "caxixi," which adds a percussive element to the sound.
The berimbau is not only a musical instrument but also a symbol of resistance, resilience, and cultural expression, holding cultural significance as a representation of Brazilian identity and African heritage, showcasing the diverse cultural landscape of Brazil.
